Vitamins for Immune Health

Many people are getting their flu shots this time of year. I switch into immune boosting mode with my supplements. I wanted to share some tips but of course I am not a Doctor myself so you should check with your own Physician before changing your routine. Check below for my favorite place to shop for 'vits'. 


Elderberry  

This herbal supplement is great for kids and adults. It comes in liquid, pill or chewable form. The flavor isn't too bad but kids will be happier if you choose one of the sweetened brands. It can be taken daily and then when fighting off a cold or virus increased to a couple times per day when symptoms are increased. Most natural remedies work best when taken at the first sign of illness. I prefer the unsweetened liquid form and keep it in my fridge. Post in the comments- what's your favorite brand?

Vitamin D

This vitamin can boost immune function as well as many other benefits. Helps brain health and sleep, reduces heart disease and inflammation. It can be found in chewable and liquid form. I choose liquid for quick absorption and also because its easy to adjust the dosage where with pills its usually either 500 or 1,000 iu. Its recommended for adults to take 1,000-2,000 iu D-3 daily in winter months for immune health.

Probiotics

This is another I take in the winter months only. People credit probiotics for increased gut health, decreased skin ailments and brain clarity. Most probiotics must be refrigerated, you can get them in pill form or powder which is easy to add to smoothies. Probiotics help your body get rid of germs quickly and also recover more quickly when illness hits. I use the arbonne brand probiotics powder because its shelf stable and individually wrapped serving size. I put it into my green smoothie, no flavor, super easy. You can hide probiotic powder in yogurt or juice for kids. Ideally consume the food/smoothie within an hour or two of preparing.
